With its motto, "A community rich in history with a constant striving for a better tomorrow," It is known as the "doughnut" around Morristown since it completely encapsulates it, and has at least five times the area. Though, near Morris Plains the width of Morris Township is less than a mile.  Morris Township was originally formed as of March 25, 1740. Portions of the township were taken on December 24, 1740, to form Roxbury Township, and on Marc 29, 1749, to form Mendham Township. Morris Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Portions of the township were taken to create Chatham Township (February 12, 1806), Passaic Township (now Long Hill Township, on March 23, 1866) and Morristown (April 6, 1865).   Convent Station is an unincorporated area within Morris Township.   In recent years, the township committee and other preservationists have worked to purchase open space, attempting to keep large development to a minimum.

Convent Station

Is an unincorporated area located within Morris Township, Morris County, New Jersey, which is adjacent to Morristown. The community is named after, and contains, the railroad station established during the 1870s to serve the 200-acre complex of Saint Elizabeth.

The namesake complex contains the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, which was founded in 1860 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth of New Jersey. The academy is a private college preparatory school for young women with an enrollment of two hundred and thirty students and it is the oldest secondary school for young women in New Jersey. The College of Saint Elizabeth, which was founded on the campus in 1899, is the oldest college for women in New Jersey and one of the first Catholic colleges in the United States to award degrees to women. The Saint Elizabeth campus also includes the Villa of Saint Ann. At one time there also was a kindergarten and elementary school on the campus and, for many years, dairy products and produce from its own large farm sustained the complex.

Among the neighborhoods of Convent Station are: Bradwahl, Cromwell Hills, and the Normandy Parkway Historic District. The Morris Township Municipal Building and the Morris Township Police Headquarters are in Convent Station.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

At Frelinghuysen Arboretum, 127 acres of woodlands, meadows, gardens, and trees surround the Colonial Revival mansion that was once the hub of a country estate.  Guests may tour the majestic mansion, see the reference library and visit the demonstration gardens.  Home of the Morris County Park Commission, the site also offers group tours, a summer camp and programs for adults and children year-round.

 

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm

73 Kahdena Rd., Morris Township

The first living historical farm in New Jersey, Fosterfields is a working farm, using the tools, techniques and materials used on farms more than a century ago.  Visitors can watch farmhand’s plant crops; milk cows and churn butter, then tour The Willows, the Foster family’s 19th century Gothic Revival home.  Gen. Joseph Warren Revere, grandson of Paul Revere, built it.
